I had already managed to get far more participation in the Brackets by dropping the handicap down to $2. It meant less of a commitment to participate, but one could still pay $10 and enter five (or go higher). The payout was on par: Win $10, runner-up $4.
Being able to print a list of the winners on the standings sheet is something else I'm grateful to BLS for being able to do, because the bowlers were able to see that week after week, there was a long list of names and very rarely someone winning more than $20. Most would leave prior to being paid, and many would parlay some or all of the past-week's winnings.
Each of those brackets could have netted me $2, but I gave it back to the bowlers on the final week of bowling (and this is what this thread is about). Maintaining records, I determined how many entries each person had done through the season and with that, gave each a number of entries in kind. I allowed no buy-ins (although I did run the $5 scratch as usual, which had for itself its highest level of entries). I had a total of 40 brackets running with the maximum entries at 13.
The bowlers received it better than I could have imagined it: Here, they were all entered and nobody had to bring any money (I paid out everything won from Week 31). And 40 brackets had payouts of $560 with the highest winner netting $50. That too meant a very long list of winners, who were also listed on the final standings. For this one only, I decided to actually print out all 40 handicap (and 4 scratch) brackets and upload the same (League ID: 6368).
Many bowlers were pleased to see a small brown envelope stapled to their scores history, with anywhere between $4 and $50 inside. I had 35 winners in all, in addition to the few on the scratch side.
It was nice (in BLS) to have been able to print 20 brackets on each side of a legal size sheet. Ten copies of that meant one sheet available for each lane pair so the bowlers could monitor their bracket progress on the final league session. The print was small, but legible.
I think I may have retained a couple of teams by doing this. I never got this many end-of-season thank-yous in the previous four seasons.
