Last night I was at the lanes, but not on my league night. Laptop was at hand to do something for a proprietor.
As I was working on that, I had a bowler in that league, who had been in my league in the past, walk up. He hadn't said much at all to me in the past couple of seasons. Now here's someone who's had a bunch of high scores in the past few years. He then began with something like, "I've got a compliment for you, and you probably don't hear too many of those. But every time I had an honor score you would have the form all ready and all we'd need to do is put down a serial number and I'd sign it, and it was done. Both you and Matt..." and he went on how a former secretary of this league, (BLS user who is as dedicated as I am) would do the same.
Naturally, I thanked him for those words. Then he said that he had an 800 series in this league - which had been run by another BLS user (he doesn't visit these forums) and he repeated how both he and I did such good work with those things.
He then showed me what that league's new secretary (probably the worst person for the job, but the league went with him having been almost abusive to two previous ones who both left the league) handed him for an award form. The local association, in its league kits, photocopied the various awards forms and put several copies in each kit. And it was this blank form that was handed to him. Basically, it went like this: If he wanted an award for the 800, he'd have to fill it out.
I just rolled my eyes.
But when I finished my other work, I decided to help out this gentleman, simply because of the nice things he had to say to me. I just put together a "league" in my own BLS (again, the laptop was with me). His is the only name that's in there, but I managed to get it so that I could generate an award form with the correct lanes, date, scores, the bowler's information, you name it. I did leave the secretary's information out of it. It took me all of 5-10 minutes, after which I pulled out the League Operations Handbook and showed him the 800 ring styles now available. His form, now complete except for the secretary and certification numbers, was signed and he would hand it to said secretary on his way out for the night.
I don't fault that secretary for not using BLS (he uses a competitor; the other secretary used BLS until he stepped down two seasons ago). But he does lack the dedication that's called for. Other league members wondered why names weren't in the AccuScore, and I told them that I wasn't asked by the league to do it or it probably would have been done....
